Today’s word: Halloween
How did “Halloween” come to be so called?
The old Celtic calendar began on November 1st and, therefore, October 31st was New Year’s Eve—the night on which witches and hobgoblins rode about for one last fling.
With the introduction of Christianity the New Year’s Day became All Saints’ Day; and the evening before became All Saints Eve or All Hallows E’en. Though the name was changed, the customs—and the belief that witches rode on this night—persisted and have come down to this day.
What’d you do for halloween?
Tonight we had our Halloween party at synchro practice, where the girls wore swimmable costumes. I wish I could show you them—but I have a feeling the YMCA wouldn’t like it that much.
On the home front, apart from our parties this past weekend, we didn’t do much— but make burgers:
I wasn’t so great at making the pumpkin cheese
and pumpkin ice cream:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2/3 cup pumpkin
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon of allspice
Directions:
Whisk everything together and make according to your ice cream maker’s directions (mine is 30 minutes), or freeze.
Hope you had a great Halloween!
